  1. Do you have a trial version of InnoDB Hot Backup?

Yes, you can order a free 30-day evaluation license of InnoDB Hot Backup by filling the order form.

  2. Which servers require licenses?

An InnoDB Hot Backup license is required on each server on which you will be making backups. Restoring a backup is free and can be done on any server (even with an expired license).

Example: Suppose you would like to run a Hot Backup on the server where your production MySQL database is running, and then transfer the backup files to a standby server. You want to restore the database on the standby server from time to time. You do not need two licenses; just one for the server running the database you wish to back up.

  3. What is the difference between perpetual and 1-year licenses?

With a 1-year license, you can take backups only for a year. After a year the license has expired and no new backups can be taken with it. However, the restore still works, so you can restore old backups even after your license has expired. A perpetual license never expires, so with a perpetual license you can take backups and restore them indefinitely.

  5. Can I use InnoDB Hot Backup after the license expires?

You cannot use InnoDB Hot Backup to back up a database after the license expires. However, you can always restore a database even if your license has expired.

  6. What upgrades am I entitled to?

With a 1-year license, you are entitled to free upgrades while your license is valid, that is, for the first year after purchase. With a perpetual license, you are entitled to free upgrades during the first 3 years after purchase.

  7. How do I obtain the upgrades?

Check back periodically to look for new releases, and use the contact form to request a copy. Please include your name, email address, and tell us the hostname and operating system / processor architecture and license ID.

  10. Can I obtain a license that is not bound to a specific server?

If you order a minimum of five (5) licenses, you can use this contact form to request a copy of InnoDB Hot Backup that is not bound to a specific server. However, you may only use the software on the licensed number of servers at any given time.

Yes, we do give a 5 % discount for non-profit organizations, including academic institutions. Please provide appropriate information to document your non-profit status.

  12. Do I have to purchase support for each server licensed?

  14. Can I purchase support for existing licenses?

Yes, you can purchase email support for a year at a time. Just fill in this contact form to purchase support for existing licenses. Please supply your customer name, contact information, platform and license ID.

  15. Can I restore a backup to a different platform?

Yes. The format of MySQL/InnoDB data and log files and Hot Backup files is platform-independent. This means that you can take a backup on one host, move the backup to another host with a different operating system and/or processor architecture, and restore it (execute the apply-log phase) there. For example, you can take backups on a Windows host, and restore them on a Linux system.

  16. What is the restriction about using InnoDB Hot Backup on Windows?

InnoDB Hot Backup uses a Perl script to automate the procedure of backing up both MyISAM and InnoDB tables. This script (innobackup) is not available on Windows. However, the procedure can be performed using manual (or scripted) steps in combination with the ibbackup utility. See sections 2.3 and 5.0 of the InnoDB Hot Backup manual.
